Flute playing techniques and methods to practice - This session, we'll take a look at the types of ornamentation and gamaks in flute playing both from an Indian classical and western music point of view.To give your playing and melodies more life, color and motion, we’ll cover a few aspects to like :


  • Embellishments like gamaks, meend, grace notes, oscillations
  • Rhythmic ornamentation
  • Volume control & dynamics

Flute playing techniques & practice methods - We’ll be looking at some methods to decode, transcribe and play your favorite tunes on the flute. These methods and exercises are powerful for ear-training and adding technique and vocabulary to your playing. I’ll take a few tunes and decode them in the session so we can go over things like :


  • Breaking down a tune into its rhythmic and melodic components
  • Different ways to write down notations
  • Ear-training exercises to help you decode songs better
  • Applying these to further enhance your playing

Flute playing techniques & practice methods - For Part 3 of this three part masterclass, we'll bring concepts together to merge together into tools for improvisation. We’ll be looking at different ways to approach this. Whether you want to compose, or you want to play along with your favorite songs, or you want to add some color, we’ll cover a few approaches :


  • Get creative with melodic ideas
  • Get creative with rhythmic ideas
  • The raga approach
  • Improvisation Tools - Call & response, free form, repetition, convey emotions

Rasika Shekar

Flute, Indian Classical Music, Music Theory Made Musical, warm-up techniques

Flautist, singer, composer, Rasika Shekar is an alumni and scholarship recipient at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. Her music education began at the age of seven, training in Carnatic music and continues to be molded by her gurus. Rasika’s music is an amalgam of decades of learning in the Carnatic and Hindustani tradition of music. She effortlessly fuses her rooted Indian sensibilities with global genres to create a soundscape so unique, that it shines like a crepuscular ray in today’s contemporary music scene. Her distinctive sound as a vocalist and flautist has led her to collaborate with some of the biggest names internationally like John McLaughlin, Shankar Mahadevan, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, classical legends like Ustad Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Shujaat Ali Khan, and many other renowned artists. She has been featured in shows like MTV Coke Studio, SRGMP, KBC and lent her voice to Bollywood films.
